Upon completion of her education, Mrs. Smithdeal moved to winston-Salem, where she met and married, Fred A. Smithdeal. Together they owned and operated the legendary Basketeria, the premier grocery store in West End, serving the Buena Vista and Country Club areas for many years. Mr. Smithdeal passed away in 1967.
Mrs. Smithdeal was a friend to everyone and was always willing to do what she could to help others. She was a longtime member of the Forsyth Country Club. While she had no children, she loved animals and horticulture. She graced many homes and functions with her beautiful flower arrangements. She was active in several garden clubs and was a member and judge in the American Rose Society.
Mrs. Smithdeal was the 1973 winner of the Nora Katherman Memorial Arrangement Trophy, a national honor for the highest scoring rose arrangement. She also adored Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging. Until her recent illness, she was a very active member of the Knollwood Baptist church and made her river house available for many church meetings and functions. She and her husband toured many foreign countries.
Interment followed funeral services held on November 6 at Knollwood Baptist Church.
The family wishes to express appreciating to the staff at Arbor Acres for the care and kindness they rendered to her these last years.
Memorials may be made to Arbor Acres or to a charity of the donor's choice. The Salem Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
