She was born October 13, 1911, northwest of Onaga, the daughter of John G. and Pauline
F. Abitz Marten. She attended Onaga Grade School for one year, White Pigeon School,
St. Paul’s Parochial School, and graduated from Onaga High School in 1930.
Amanda owned and operated Honig Mercantile in Onaga from 1961 to 2002. She hung
wallpaper for 17 years before buying the mercantile and had a wallpaper shop at her
home.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Duluth and the Ladies Aid - Lutheran
Women’s Missionary League. She had served for twenty-two years as Sunday School
Superintendent and taught grades 1-4 at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in 1930. She was a
graduate of the Menninger 4-year Bible Class.
Amanda married Roland C. Honig July 8, 1933 at Duluth. He died November 23, 1974.
Survivors include one son, Larry Honig and his wife Wanda, of Onaga; one daughter
Darline Robinson and her husband Jim, of Arvada, Colorado; seven grandchildren and
thirteen great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 14th at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at
Duluth. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Amanda will lie in state at the
Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga where a Prayer Service will be held at
7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by visitation. She will also lie in state an hour before
service time at the church. Memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church c/o the funeral home.
