James Adams was a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War. He did not survive the war, but family tale is that he was killed in 1862 resulting from a bar fight.

His widow, Margaret Melvina, remarried a man who did not want to raise another man's child, which was unfortunate for James Jr., who's grandmother raised him from age two on.

** note ~ There is disagreement about James' middle "name." Some researchers believe he is "OF Montgomery COUNTY," while others claim this was his actual middle name.
