Wayne was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and son. He was equally devoted to his Los Angeles Police Department family. He touched many souls throughout his life and never met a stranger. He genuinely loved all of his family and was always willing to help anyone in need. Wayne was truly a remarkable man who was willing to give to others with little regard for himself. He an an inshakeable faith in God and acknowledged Him in all ways. Wayne was a member of Union Methodist Church in Eclectic, Alabama. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was proud to be a brother in the Masons. He will be missed by his family and all those whose lives he touched.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Gassett Funeral Home Chapel in Wetumpka, with Rev. Charles Sanders and Rev. Jay Andrews officiating. Burial will follow in Union Methodist Cemetery, in Eclectic with Masonic Rites.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Abernathy; son, Kenneth Wayde Abernathy; daughters, Tammy Renee McDowell and Dawn Heather Gilliland; brother, Douglas Lewis Abernathy; sisters, Pansy Christine Weldon and Betty Carol Burdett; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Rayme Wayne Abernathy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Montgomery Cancer Center.
