Nancy Jewell "Judy" Ortner Ownby, 86, of Tullahoma, went to be with Jesus, her best friend, on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012. She died of an aortic aneurysm at Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma.
Born June 17, 1925, in Fayetteville, she had made her home in Lewisburg for 51 years before moving to Tullahoma in 1997 to be near her beloved sister, Jean McNutt, who survives.
Judy was a member of the first graduating class of Saint Thomas School of Nursing in 1946. She went to work at several physicians' offices and Gordon's Hospital in Lewisburg, later retiring as Director of Nursing at Leonard's Hospital, also in Lewisburg.
An active member of First Baptist Church, she was involved in Morning Glories, a women's Bible study group; the Kinozelian Class; her Sunday school group; and the local Red Hat Ladies. Her life was filled with many fulfilling activities, such as crocheting, painting, gardening, reading, studying, and always seeking to reach others for Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Ortner and Annie Irene Ogle Ortner of Fayetteville; her loving husband of 37 years, William Douglas Ownby; and two brothers, James Jobe of Shelbyville and Ralph Ortner of Fayetteville.
She will be greatly missed by her sister, Jean Ortner McNutt; nieces, Jan (Bill) Cox and Nancy Russom, all of Tullahoma, Ann (Steve) Clark and Barbara (Chuck) Saunders, all of Huntsville, Ala., Cindy Willis of Mt. Juliet, and Jackie Parker of Sewanee; nephew, Sonny (Debbie) Willis of Lewisburg; great-nephews, Nathan and Jared Cox, Justin Lyons, Philip and Lance Clark, Kyle and Mark Saunders, Matthew and William Howard Yowell, and Austin Parker; great-nieces, Andrea Lyons and Christy Sheppard; and four great-great-nieces.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 26, at Kilgore Funeral Home in Tullahoma.
Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Lone Oak Cemetery in Lewisburg.
