Mr. Abild died Thursday at a Mitchell hospital.
He had operated a hardware store at Aberdeen and had been a farmer in the Kimball area.
He had served three terms in the South Dakota House of Representatives and one term in the Senate.
As a former speaker of the house, he had been given credit for achieving initial appropriations for establishment of Mount Rushmore Memorial. At one time he was inadvertently introduced in Mexico City as Governor of South Dakota.
The Abild family homesteaded in Clay County in June of 1876.
