Lucille was raised by her grandmother, Estella Cone Hawkinson (8651452). She was separated from her younger brothers and sister at an early age. They were all placed in the orphanage in Owatonna, Minnesota when their parents were unable to provide for them. She had very little contact with any of her siblings. Lucille worked hard and put herself through college, graduating from the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wisconsin in 1938. She worked for the National Park Service for many years, retiring in 1975.
