James served in the United States Navy during World War II.

James was Vice-Commander of the newly formed U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary unit (Flotilla 7-5) and was helping in the flotilla's first ever assistance call, when he died after suffering a heart attack. He was helping to recover the bodies of three of four victims of a boating accident on a stormy and wind-tossed Lake Travis. He was awarded a posthumous commendation from the Auxiliary in San Diego, California, in April 1969.
