Alva grew up in Satanta, graduating from Satanta High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army in World War II in the Pacific Theater in a military police unit. On April 25, 1947, he married Ardith Rose Beery in Liberal. She survives. The couple moved to Satanta where they raised their family. Alva worked as a production manager for the oil industry from 1946 to 2010 until his health no longer allowed him to continue working. He enjoyed painting and dominoes.
He was a member of the of the Church of Christ of Satanta.
In addition to his wife, Alva is survived by two sons, Gary M. Decker of Dumas, Texas and Tim A. Decker and wife Linda of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one daughter, Gerie J. Allen and husband Matt of Derby; three brothers, Gene Decker and wife Barbara of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dale I. Decker and wife Sue of Hugoton, and Lloyd T. Decker and wife Sharen of Satanta; two sisters, Ruth E. Dale and husband Roger of Eugene, Oregon and Mary Lou Alexander and husband Dwain of Ozark, Missouri; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one brother, Marion Decker; and two sisters, Lena Mae Davis and Betty Hale.
Funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ in Satanta on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Jerry Palmer presiding. Burial will follow at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta. Visitation will be at Church of Christ in Satanta on Friday, March 9, 2012 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Church of Christ or Satanta Long Term Care Unit in care of Swaim Funeral Home - 1901 Sixth Ave - Dodge City, KS 67801.
