Ava M. Adams, 89, of St. John's Lutheran Ministries Home in Billings, formerly of Big Timber, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at RiverStone Hospice Home. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Aug. 4, 2012, at the ranch south of Shawmut.

Ava Maxine Osse was born on March 12, 1922, at the family home in Jamestown, N.D., to Bessie (Thompson) and John Osse. She was one of 11 children. Ava grew up in northern Minnesota and moved to Montana where she attended country school in Cushman and high school in Lavina.

She married Clifford Paulson in 1939 and to that union were born three children, Curt, Claire and Gail. She was a farm wife and assistant postmaster and raised her family in Belmont until Clifford passed away in 1964. Ava then moved to Billings and became house mother at night at Maralac Hall, St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing. She attended Billings Business College during the day and became the manager of the admitting office at St. Vincent's Hospital, where she worked until 1969 when she married Edgar "Eddy" M. Adams Jr. and moved to the ranch south of Shawmut, gaining three stepchildren.

She and Eddy loved to entertain, hosting many dinner parties and large gatherings, including a wedding for Eddy's son Harlan "Kit" and for her granddaughter Krystal. She loved to garden, cook, sew and read. Ava was always the first one to offer to ride horseback whenever there were cattle to be moved. She "hired" grandchildren in the summer to work for her in the house and yard until they were old enough to work in the hay fields, then the next oldest was her helper. She and Grampa Ed taught them good work ethics and they also shared their love for the ranch life.

In 1990, Ava and Eddy moved into Big Timber. They spent many hours playing bridge. Eddy passed away in 1997. In 2001, Ava moved to Billings to be near her daughter.

Ava was preceded in death by her husbands Clifford and Eddy; son Curt Paulson; as well as six siblings.

She is survived by her two daughters, Claire Webber of Billings and Gail (Mike) Alexander of Washington; stepchildren Harlan (Asja) Adams and Lynn Adams of Seattle, and Dan Adams of Germany; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five siblings.
