---------
Geo. C. Abbitt, Jr., aged 19, oldest son of Rev. Geo. C. Abbitt Rector of Grace Episcopal church was found dead at one p.m. Thursday in his room in the upper story of the family home on Liberty street.

He was found by a servant lying with a hole through his head made with a Winchester rifle which was lying on the floor containing an empty shell. All of the other members of the family were attending a church picnic at Edwards Mill. Dinner was served to Miss Fannie Owsley who takes her meals at Dr. Abbitts, but George did not appear for dinner. A little later a servant went to his room and found him lying dead on the floor. An inquest was held about three o'clock and the following verdict was returned:

"We the jury find from the evidence that George Abbitt, Jr., came to his death by a gunshot wound in his right temple that the gun used was a Springfield rifle and the manner of its infliction is unknown to us.
"E. M. MOSS, Foreman.
"L. W. MEANS,
"T. S. WINFREE,
"E. H. BULL,
"G. U. WEST,
"S. H. HAMLETT,
"JAS. L. ALLENSWORTH, Cor."

The young man spent the forenoon in making collections for a local business house and went home shortly before noon. He was possessed of a very bright mind, and was a student of the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., where he made an excellent student last year. He graduated from the City High School in the class of 1908.

He was a member of Co. D. the local military company and proved himself a brave soldier during the active campaign of last year. After his school was out, he was sent with his company to Cobb in the summer and served until the soldiers were relieved from duty. He was a boy of fine character and was the pride of his parents who are heartbroken by the sorrow that has come upon them. In their trouble they have the heartfelt sympathy of all the people of the city.

The funeral services will be held at the Episcopal church this afternoon at 4 o'clock and the body will be interred in Riverside Cemetery.

Co. D. will attend in a body and there will be the usual military honors at the grave except that there will be no volley fired. The funeral will be at four o'clock this afternoon. Relatives from Virginia are expected to arrive today.
