SOPHRONIA ABBE, daughter of John Simons and Hannah (Billing) Abbe, born in Enfield, Conn., January 20, 1811.

"Sophronia Abbe attended the Litchfield Female Academy in 1829. Born in 1811 to John Simmons Abbe and Hannah Billing, Sophronia followed in the footsetps of her sister Harriet and after completing her studies at the Litchfield Female Academy pursued a career as a teacher. She taught at her sister's school in Richmond, Virginia and at the Abbe Institute in Tennessee. In 1829 she married Myron Kilbourn (originally of Litchfield, Connecticut) in Tennessee and the couple had four children." (Source: Litchfield Historical Society.org)

In October, 1829, she joined her sister in her school at Richmond, Va., and later founded the seminary with her sister in Tennessee, known as the "Abbe Institute," (it was founded in 1835 in Lebanon, Wilson Co, TN) a select school for young ladies.

Married at Maysville, Buckingham County, Tenn (Maryville, Blount Co ??)., December 23, 1829, MYRON KILBOURN, born in Litchfield, Conn., October 10, 1801; died March 8, 1858.

He was son of Whitman and Thalia (Osborn) Kilbourn; was graduated from Hamilton College in 1823; spent several years as a classical teacher in Kentucky; was an early settler of Henry County, Iowa, and justice of the peace there; resided in Lowell, Iowa.

1 - James Alanson Kilhourn, b. in Tennessee 1830; d. about 1835.

2 - Felicia Hernans Kilbourn, b. in Tennessee about 1834 ; d. about 1835.

Before August 1838, Sophronia and Myron moved to Henry County, Iowa.

3 - Charles Kilbourn, b. in Iowa, Aug. 3, 1838. He joined the Federal Army in 1861, served as private three years, lost his right arm at the battle of Atlanta, Ga. Lived in Iowa, near his father. Married before 1864, Mahalia Reed.

4 - Joseph Whitman Kilbourn, b. in Lowell, Henry Co Iowa, June 24, 1842. After his father's death he bought a large tract of land in Mercer County, Mo. Married (1) Alice New, daughter of a Methodist preacher. She d. four years after her marriage. He m. (2) Sarah Jane Lloyd of Missouri. Child by first wife: Sanford Abbe, b. about 1862. Child by second wife : Myron Charles.
