John Carter

John Douglas (Jake) Carter DALLAS- John Douglas (Jake) Carter passed away after a brief illness on April 17, 2012 in Lubbock, Texas. He was born July 25, 1924 in LaRue, Texas to Chellie Irene and Thomas Willis Carter and was one of five children. He attended LaPoyner High School in LaPoyner, Texas and graduated with a Masters Degree from East Texas State University. He married Freida Jo Dye in Dallas, Texas, November 22, 1952. They were married for 42 years and resided in Oak Cliff. He recently moved to Lubbock, Texas where he resided for 3 years. He is a former member of Cedar Hill Church of Christ and more recently attended Monterey Church of Christ in Lubbock. Jake was a retired American basketball player who played for East Texas State University and later was selected by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1948 BAA Draft. He later played with the Denver Nuggets and Anderson Packers (1949-50) in the NBA for 24 games. Jake went on to teach at W. H. Adamson High School for 30 years where he taught Algebra and coached basketball, and then at Kimball High School for one year before retiring. He took Adamson to the state basketball playoffs in 1964, which was the first appearance in the state finals since 1923-1924. He was inducted into Texas A&M Commerce/East Texas State University Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1981. He enjoyed collegiate basketball as well as Texas Rangers baseball in addition to spending time at the family farm in East Texas. He was devoted to his family as well as to the many students whom he taught and mentored throughout his teaching and coaching career. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Freida Jo Dye Carter.

He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Carter Johnson and her husband, Dr. Greg Johnson of Lubbock, Texas and Michele Carter-Graham of Carrollton, Texas; six grandchildren, Richard Graham, Jill Little, Amy Townsend, Wesley Graham, Rachel Johnson, and Erika Johnson; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Cummings of LaRue, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be at Laurel Land Funeral Home on Friday, April 20, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. and services will be held at Laurel Land on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 4 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas.
