THOMASTON – Walter M. Abbott, 89, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport. He was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Perham.

Walter grew up in Perham and attended schools in Perham, Caribou and Washburn. He received his GED in 1970 from Georges Valley High School, Thomaston. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He served on the USS Mohave, an international iceberg cutter that helped break up ice near Greenland. Before and during the war he was stationed in Rockland working on a fireboat. For 37 years he worked as a route salesman for Sealtest Ice Cream, selling from Bucksport to Wiscasset and inland to Jefferson. He was a longtime member of Thomaston Federated Church, American Legion and a 55-year member of Orient Masonic Lodge, Thomaston. He always enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling and also loved to work around the house tending his gardens.

He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Sage; and half sister, Violet Davey. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred "Millie" Abbott of Thomaston; daughters, Muriel Ingalls and husband, David, of Kingston, N.H., Doreen Leavitt and husband, Darryl, of Warren, and Patricia Perry and husband, Eric, of Thomaston; grandchildren, Jon Ingalls of Windham, Beth Ingalls of Alexandria, Va., Darryl Leavitt of Lincolnville, Jennifer Stevens of Chelsea and Jilissa Perry of Thomaston; 10 great-grandchildren; half sisters, Dorothy Greene of West Lebanon, N.H., and Evelyn Jordan of Connecticut; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Village Cemetery, Thomaston. (Bangor Daily News posted 4/23/2012)
