Mr. Acheson, who had been ill for two months, first came to Craigmont half a century ago and had served as postmaster from 1946 until his retirement last year.
He had been bedfast since suffering an initial attack Nov 28 and he appeared to be making progress despite the strain suffered when his house burned Jan 2 and he was carried from the flaming building.
The fire destroyed the Acheson family home. The family had been living in an apartment
rented by Craigmont residents until a new home could be built. In the meantime, neighbors had launched a campaign for clothing, furniture and utensils.
Mr. Acheson was born April 16, 1897, at Winterset, Iowa. He moved to Craigmont in 1909 and took a job with Union Warehouse Mercantile Co.
He moved to Prosser, WA to work in a feed company there in 1945, but returned to Craigmont the following year and was appointed postmaster in July, 946.
Mr. Acheson was a member of the American Legion, having served in the Army from September, 1918 to January 3, 1919. He was a member of the Grange was an elder of the Craigmont Christian Church.
He married Helen Vallem of Craigmont at Clarkston July 25, 1945. She survives at the family home. Other survivors include sons, Gene 13, Lynn 11, and Wiley, seven mos and Two daughters, Mona . 9 and Olivia, 6 all at home.
