Sea captain, Capt. Joseph Smith Adams was the son of Joseph Smith Adams, Sr. and Adelia Manter. He married Adeline Mathilda Cleaveland on Sept. 30, 1862 but died at sea in the Arctic Ocean just 2 years later. They had no children together. (She subsequently married Thomas Gibbs Campbell of Ontario, Canada in June of 1867).

"CAPT. JOSEPH S. ADAMS JR., Died at sea Aug. 21, 1864; Aged 34 years. Nothing is our own; we hold our pleasures just a little while, ore they are fled. One by one life robs us of our little treasures. Nothing is our own except our dead."
