AAKRANN, KLEMET AND ANNA by Thyra Aus

Klemet O. Aakrann was born April 6, 1842, in Tynset kommune, Hedmark fylke, Norway(Church book from Tynset
confirms birthinfo).

He came to America in the 1880s. He met & married Anna Johnson, who was well known for her beautiful singing voice. They lived at Grafton, N.D., and their four children were born there, two sons and two daughters.

The Klemet Aakrann family came to Ward County in 1900 and Klemet proved up his homestead on the NW 1/4, section 12, in 1905. They built an eight room house, which was surrounded by a large fenced yard, a big hip-roofed barn, and planted many trees. It was said the Klemet Aakrann farm had one of the best deep wells in the area, which assured them of having a plentiful water supply.

Otto, the oldest child, left home in his teens. He married and resided at Moorhead, Minn., for the rest of his life. The other son, Arnold, went west, and some time later, died in Centralia, Wash.

The two daughters, Mary and Addie, stayed with their parents on the homestead, and helped Klemet with the farm work. Anna became confined to a wheelchair, so Addie took over the housework. But in 1921, Klemet Aakrann fell from the hay loft in the barn and broke his hip. So with both parents in wheelchairs, the work for Mary and Addie was doubly hard.

One afternoon in August, 1928, the kerosene stove in the kitchen exploded. The house burned to the ground, but neighbors Edwin Olson and Erling Henrichs went in and carried Klement and Anna to the safety of the yard when the fire began. By winter, a carpenter had built the Aakrann's a modest four room house. Anna Aakrann died the next year.

During the depression, in 1934, the farm changed owners, so Addie and Mary moved to Minot, in a rented house on Central Avenue. Klemet Aakrann entered a rest home in Minot at the same time. He died on Jan. 31, 1940, at 98 years of age.

Mary died about 1945, and Addie died in the 1960s.

Klemet, Anna, Mary Aakrann are buried in Norwich Lutheran Cemetery, Addie was burried in Rosehill Cemetery, Minot.
