She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, James Henry Beale, her parents, Myrtle Howard and John Simps Burcham of Union City, Tennessee; her brothers, Randall, Briggs, Elbert and Emmet Burcham; and her sisters, Margaret Huggins, Elizabeth Adams and Margaret Burcham.
She is survived by her two children, Steve Beale (Anne) of Memphis and Mary Ann Bennett (Dan) of Atlantic Beach, Florida. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Kathryn Beale Flannigan (David), Alex Beale, Catherine Licandro (Joe) and James Mitchell; a great-granddaughter, Cara Ann Licandro, and several nieces and nephews.
Marie graduated from Union City (TN) High School, where she was Homecoming Queen. She also attended Bowling Green (KY) College of Commerce. In the late 1940s, she was a Stewardess for Chicago and Southern Airlines and flew on DC-3 airplanes to Havana Cuba, and to Chicago, Miami and New Orleans.
Before retiring from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, she was a secretary to many notable Tennesseans including US Congressman Robert "Fats" Everett and Governor Gordon Browning. She also worked at the Kennedy Veteran's Hospital, the former US Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS) and at President Andrew Jackson's home, the Hermitage.
She made her home in Nashville, TN for 44 years, before moving to Memphis in 2006 to live at the Kirby Pines Retirement Community.
Interesting stories of her early life include raising 20 cats as a young girl while growing up on a farm and seeing her mother hose down unruly prisoners while living above the County Jail when her father was Sheriff of Obion County, TN.
There will be a private graveside service at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
