ALAMOSA—Richard (Rick) "Gandy" Abeyta, 74, passed away May 3, 2012.

He was born in Alamosa on August 29, 1937. Rick graduated from Alamosa High School. He was married to Mary Lynn Parker in Alamosa on August 1, 1966.

He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base where he played basketball as a starter for the Air Force traveling team. He was honorably discharged on October 5, 1961. He worked in Alamosa as a grocery store manager for Arapahoe Super Market and Kelloff's Market for over 40 years.

His passion was bowling with friends in several local bowling leagues where he developed many personal relationships. He loved sports and he enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids participate in their various activities.

He is survived by his wife Mary Lynn of 46 years and his children Steve of Aurora, Colorado, Sandra of Denver, Colorado and Keith of Alamosa. He is also survived by his sisters, Genevieve Garcia (Joe) of Alamosa, Pauline Anthoni (Robert) of Tinton Falls, NJ, and Phil Senseney of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Eloy Abeyta and Philomena Garcia , his older brother Eloy in 1991 and his grandmother, Maria Genoveva Garcia.

Cremation was chosen and a gathering will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 11 a.m.. at the Alamosa Third Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at Third and Richardson in Alamosa.
