Juanita Yribar passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at age 96.
Juanita was born to Basque immigrants Manuel and Asuncion Aberasturi on October 23, 1915 in Boise, Idaho. She lived in Boise until age 6, then moved to the Highline District where her father built his sheep operation. She attended Highline School which was a two room school house until the 7th grade. In 1928, her father passed away and the family's sheep were moved to a parcel of land near Lake Hazel and Five Mile roads. Juanita attended Lake Hazel Elementary School, a one room schoolhouse.
In 1932, she graduated from St. Teresa's Academy at age 16, during the height of the Depression. Upon graduation, she supported her mother and sisters by working at the Home Owner's Loan Corp., Federal Public Works, and the Public Utilities Commission. At 19, she was orphaned when her mother died, and she made a home for her two younger sisters, Petra and Mary.
She married Eustaquio "Stack" Yribar in 1938. They drove their Hupmobile to Florida and put their car on a ferry for their honeymoon in Cuba. Her sisters continued to live with them for many years, even after they had married and had husbands off to war.
Children were her specialty and she relished the arrival of her children, Micaela, Dan and Mona. She returned to work when they went to school as a medical secretary and office manager. She wrangled Doctors Smith, Sorensen, Lung and Jewell into shape for the next 24 years.
Juanita had an enormous reserve of energy and a sharp mind. She could outwork anyone, and had more accomplished by 6:00 A.M. than we could finish all day. She was an amazing cook, gardener, fishing fanatic, traveler and family healer. When her grandchildren arrived, she poured her generous love into them and was a hands-on "Amuma."
Family was of utmost importance and Juanita delighted in her huge extended family. She was fiercely proud of all of us, but also of her faith, her Basque blood, her country, her state, and her city. She was a member of St. John's Parish, charter member of Euzkaldunak, Basque Girls' Club, La Organization Independiente Social, and the Basque Museum and Cultural Center.
She was a remarkable force of nature and will be sorely missed by many. Stack died in 1993.
She is survived by her children, Micaela, Dan and( Kathy), and Mona; her six grandchildren, Scott Yribar, Amy Yribar, Ann Yribar Vonde, Alexa, Marissa, and Dylan Ochsner; and two great grandchildren, Ava and Bella. She is also survived by her cousin, Regina Aldecoa, and dozens of nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Spain.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2012 from 5-7pm at Summers Funeral Homes 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise with a vigil service commencing at 7pm. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 10:30 am at St. John's Cathedral. Burial will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery.
