He was almost 50 years old when he enlisted as a private in the Cherokee Legion, Georgia State Guards Cavalry, Company A, Confederate States Army. After the Civil War ended, Elijah moved to Montgomery County, Arkansas with his wife and five of his children: John, William, Martha, Mary and Lucy. He lived next to his brother Isreal and wife who had moved to the area before the Civil War began.
