"CHILD INTO WELL
Two Year Old Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ackeridge [Acridge] Met Accidental Death. — Funeral Yesterday
Ruby Ackeridge [Acridge], the 2 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ackeridge [Acridge], who reside in the country eight miles southwest of the city, met accidental death about 3 o'clock Saturday [10 Apr 1915] afternoon near the home by falling into a well in the yard. The well is a deep well one, and the death of the child was probably instantaneous. The body was recovered by means of grappling hooks, within a short time after the accident occurred.
The well at the Ackeridge [Acridge] home has been for several years covered so effectually with a wooden platform that there has been no danger of anybody falling into it. However, the recent rains have caused the earth near the top of the well to cave in leaving an opening which was not very large, but which is really of sufficient size to allow the body of a small child to fall through. However, the Ackeridge [Acridge] did not know of the opening into the well and when they saw the baby playing in the yard, they did not suspect the slightest danger. About half an hour after the child was last observed, the mother went to the door to look for it, but it was nowhere to be seen. The parents, becoming immediately alarmed, started to search for the child, and it was after they had been searching only a few minutes when the opening into the well was discovered, and the awful truth flashed upon them.
The funeral was held yesterday [11 Jul 1915] afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home eight miles southwest of the city, and interment was in the Black Jack cemetery."
