Paul Abel was born in Abeltown, now part of Dayton in Rhea County. He served in the Army in France at the end of World War I. He returned home to Cleveland, Tennessee, and, with his brother Raleigh and other members of the family, operated Abel Hardware and Furniture Store for many years.
