DEATH OF JAMES ABBEY. . . This sad event occurred at the residence of his mother at ten o'clock last evening. It was not unexpected. Mr. A.'s health had been declining for some months, and for several weeks past his most intimate friends were apprehensive that he could not recover. . . As the only son of an aged and widowed mother, he was constantly solicitous of her comfort and welfare. . . Mr. Abbey was by profession a steamboatman, and he was known everywhere on the Western waters as a contributor to the newspapers. He wrote much, and his peculiar style and apt quotations gave a piquancy to his productions which made them much sought after. He occasionally wrote for our own paper, and was a regular contributor to the St. Louis, New Orleans, and other journals. At the time of his death he was an officer of the new St. Louis and New Orleans packet M. S. Mepham. Mr. M. was his ardent friend. Born and reared in New Albany, Mr. Abbey was known to all our old citizens and many others. . . - New Albany Daily Ledger 16 May 1864
