Joan Ackley was born at Hammon*, Okla., July 22, 1932. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reed D. Ackley. She began her school days at Quartermaster school; all her high school years were at Hammon. Basketball and softball are her favorite sports. Joanís hobby is photography. Her favorite song is "I Love You Because." To be a housewife is her ambition.

Ceremony, August 26


In a double ring ceremony Miss Joan Ackley was married to Leon Tomberlin at 11:30 a. m. on August 26. Vows were read in the W. I. Trent home.

The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reed Ackley, and Mr. Tomberlin is a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Tomberlin, all of Hammon.

W. I. Trent, a Church of Christ minister, officiated at the ceremony.

The bride wore an aqua crepe dress with white accessories. Her shoulder corsage was of white carnations.

The couple was attended by Miss Cosette Turner and Harold Baggett.

Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served in the home of the brideís parents. Included among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Tomberlin, Miss Cosette Turner and Harold Baggett.

Mr. and Mrs. Tomberlin went on a wedding trip to Wichita Falls, Texas, and Oklahoma City.

For traveling, Mrs. Tomberlin chose a black and red wool suit.

The bride and groom are both graduates of Hammon High School.

Mr. Tomberlin is with the First National Bank in Hammon.

They are at home to their friends in the South apartment in the Savage property across the street from the Mrs. B. Boulware residence.

On 1st Anniversary


In observing the first wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Tomberlin, Sunday, August 26, a picnic dinner was enjoyed on the grounds of Red Moon school.

Those present were Messrs. and Mmes. Sid Cogburn, JoAnn, Roy and Betty, Strong City; R. L. Tomberlin and Bill, Reed Ackley and June, Buford Ackley and Jamie, Leon Tomberlin, Sgt. and Mrs. Carroll W. Miller, Roswell, N. Mex.

In July 1955 Joan was living in/near Midwest City, Oklahoma.
In May 1958 Joan was living in/near Midwest City.

Mrs. Tomberlin is a graduate of Paul's Beauty College, Oklahoma City, and is qualified to do your beauty work. She announces that she will specialize in bleaches and hair coloring.

Joan's Beauty Salon will have its Grand Opening on Monday, April 27, 9 a. m. to 9 p. m.

OF AMERICA


Appearing in the 1966 edition of OUTSTANDING YOUNG WOMEN OF AMERICA are Mrs. L. E. Hodge, Jr., and Mrs. Leon Tomberlin of Hammon. Selected by a board of advisory editors from leaders of national women's organizations, including Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson and U. S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith, Mrs. Hodge and Mrs. Tomberlin have been recognized for "outstanding ability, accomplishments and service to the community, country and profession."

Both Mrs. Hodge and Mrs. Tomberlin are natives of Hammon and are graduates of the Hammon High School. Both young women are pioneer families that played an important part in the settlement of early day Hammon. Mrs. Tomberlin is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. Ackley and the late Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Hensley. Mrs. Hodge is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. H. "Butch" Clark and the late Mr. and Mrs. K. T. Richardson.

MRS. LEON TOMBERLIN
Mrs. Leon Tomberlin is the former Joan Ackley, daughter of Mrs. Francis Ackley and the late Reed Ackley. She and her husband, Leon Tomberlin, are the parents of four children, Mike, David, Dean and Kitty Fran. They are active members of the Church of Christ.

Serving as a professional woman, Mrs. Tomberlin owns and operates her own business, Joan's Beauty Salon. She and her husband also own and operate Leon's Country Boy Drive-In.

Mrs. Tomberlin is a member of the Red Moon Culture Club and is presently recording secretary. She is also Fourth District Chairman of the Indian Cultural Heritage Committee of the Oklahoma state Federation of Women's Clubs. She is a member of the American Legion Auxilliary,(sic) Women's Democratic Society and the National Hairdressers Ass'n. She has also served in fund raising campaigns for her community. Her hobbies are sewing and bowling.

Attends Workshop
At O. C. C.


When Joan Tomberlin arrived home Thursday evenin(sic) from Oklahoma City where she had attended a three-day workshop and lectureship at OCC, she found a lovely bouquet of Fuchsia colored carnations and white daisies and a card wishing her a happy birthday and welcome home from her family.

On Saturday her mother, Mrs Frances Ackley, entertained with a surprise birthday dinner for Joan. The cake for the special occasion, July 22, was baked by son, Mike, complete with ? brightly lighted candles decorating the top.

Celebrating with Joan were Skeeter Winn, El Reno, Wanda and Robert Bigfoot, Leon Tomberlin, Mike and David and Dean, June and Mrs Ackley.

To complete a week of celebrating, the Birthday Club, members arrived on Monday with food for a lovely luncheon Present to wish Joan many more happy returns were Mrs. J. E. Clark, Mrs. Jo Marilyn Kern, Mrs. Carl Orgain, Mrs. Shelton Dick, Mrs. Lonnie Johnson and Mrs. Emma Jean Newcomb; children David and Dean Tomberlin, Roy Creswell, Roger and Robin Kern, Peggy Johnson and Greg Orgain.

While in Oklahoma City for the workshop Mrs. Tomberlin visited in the W. C. Lister home and at St. Anthony hospital with Connie Flick, who remained critically ill.

Joan Tomberlin (center) Hammon, was honored September 20 as one of the top 10 beauty consultants for Mary Kay, Inc., the Dallas-headquarted cosmetics firm. Presending the award to Mrs. Tomberlin, who won the coveted honors from among 3,600 beauty consultants nationwide, are Mary Kay Ash, the firm's chairman of the board, and Vaughn Monore, one of America's best known entertainment personalities. The award was made at the firm's Fifth Annual Seminar at Dallas, Texas, attended by some 2,000 persons. Mrs. Tomberlin and her husband, Leon, reside at 505 South 7th.

Joan and Leon Tomberlin of 7816 Singleton Bend Road, Marble Falls, Texas will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a Texas Hill County Barbecue on Saturday August 19, 2000. The celebration will take place at the Hensel Camp Cafeteria and festivities will begin at 1:00 p.m. Everyone that has known the Tomberlins are invited to attend the gala. A reception will follow at 2:30 p.m.

Joan Ackley and Leon Tomberlin were married August 26, 1950 at Hammon, Oklahoma. They have three sons, Mike and his wife Pam, Children Jennifer, Jill, Jordann, Joseph and Jonathan, who live in Florence, Alabama; David and his wife Kay, children Emily and Kirby, from Birmingham, Alabama; Dean and his wife Terri, children Patrick, Christopher and Stephanie, who live in Marble Falls, Texas. The Tomberlins lived in Hammon most of their lives and moved to Marble Falls, Texas in 1989 to manage Hensel Christian Youth Camp. They now reside across the street from the camp, while Dean and Terri currently manage Camp Hensel.

Ida Joan Ackley was born July 22, 1932 to Reed D. and Frances H. Ackley at Hammon*, Oklahoma and departed this life on January 11, 2011 at the age of 78 years. She was married to Jimmie Leon Tomberlin on August 26, 1950 in Hammon, Oklahoma. To this union were born 3 sons and 1 daughter.

Joan was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by their daughter, Kitty Fran, at the age of 20 months. Her parents and a sister Lahoma June and infant sister Jean.

Survivors include her husband Leon of the home in Marble Falls, Texas. Three sons and their wives, Mike and Pam Tomberlin, Florence, Alabama; David and Kay Tomberlin, Flower Mound, Texas and Dean and Terri Tomberlin, Marble Falls, Texas. 10 grandchildren: Patrick and his wife Alicia Tomberlin, Marble Falls, Texas; Jennifer Tomberlin, Florence, Alabama; Jillian Tomberlin, Auburn, Alabama; Jordann and her husband, Chris Ray, Southside, Alabama; Joseph and Jonathan Tomberlin, Florence, Alabama; Christopher and his wife Katrisha Tomberlin, Lubbock, Texas; Stephanie Tomberlin, Lubbock, Texas; Emily and her husband Jared Burns, Fort Worth, Texas; Kirby Tomerlin, San Antonio, Texas; two great granddaughters, Chloe and Kyndall Ray, Southside, Alabama and a many other relatives and friends.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hensel Christian Youth Camp, 7819 Singleton Bend Road, Marble Falls, Texas 78654 in lieu of flowers. Memorial services conducted from the Travis Peak Church of Christ, Marble Falls, Texas on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
