Lucy Jane (Else) Old, 104, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, eleven days shy of her 105th birthday, with her loving daughters by her side.

Lucy was born on her family homestead to Big Hole pioneers, Weldon and Annie Else. She was the second born of 11 children. She attended a one-room school in the Gibbons District. After graduating from the eighth grade she stayed with her aunt and uncle, Fred and Capitola Else in Little Rock, Ark., where she attended high school graduating in 1925. Her mother passed away during her senior year and after graduation she returned to the Big Hole to help care for her siblings. Lucy attended the Butte Business College on a life scholarship which she paid for with two gold coins given to her by her grandmother.

Education and religion were important to her. After her children were grown she attended Prairie Bible Institute in Canada and later worked several years at Gospel Missionary Union in Smithville, Mo. Lucy was forced to retire, being replaced by a computer. She returned to Montana and became very active helping any and all family members, friend and neighbors who needed her.

Lucy was a world traveler. She loved to "GO". Visits to see her daughters in Washington and the Bitterroot, brothers and sisters in the Big Hole, niece, nephews, cousins and friends throughout the United States and Canada were common. She attended class reunions in Arkansas and Missouri into her eighties. At 77, she went to the Holy Land. She also went to the Caribbean on a couple of occasions. Her motto: Have bag will travel!

Lucy enjoyed living at the Continental Gardens Independent Living Facility for several years. She was blessed to continue living independently while nurturing new friendships with staff and residents. Since January, she has lived at the Copper Ridge Health and Rehab, with the caring and loving staff meeting all of her needs. She enjoyed sharing stories and rhymes.

Lucy had many things that were very important in her life, especially all the little children. She was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1926. There she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school. She hosted Bible study in her home for 39 years. She enjoyed weekly piano lessons for the last 12 years, a gift from her niece, Joanne and husband, Jeff. At 103 she was still going to the cemetery to put flowers on the graves of loved ones in Butte and the Big Hole.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Old; daughter and son-in-law, Billie and Elbert Abbey; grandsons, Don Abbey and Darryl Tveidt; great-grandsons, Jason Coon and Matthew Kiewatt; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Estella Else, Fred and Jennie Else, and Lester and Tina Else; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel Else, Margariette Else, Ethel and Dell Bacon, Nettie and Ray Bacon, Anna Faye and Bert Bacon, Mabel and Kenneth Murray, and Grace and Ole Hegglund.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Hollis Coon of Butte, and Capitola and Dan Tveidt of Amboy, Wash.; grandchildren, Del and Colleen Abbey, Emmett and Anne Coon, Dan Coon, Marcia and Steve Lubick, Ed and Angie Coon, Leon and Kenda Coon, Tim and Amy Coon, Melanie Coon and Monte Makin, Barbara and Chris Carlson, Kim and Randy Miller, Darren Tveidt, and Kara and Jeremy West. She is also survived by 32 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren with three on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucy prayed for her family and friends every day. She wrote, "Take time to pray, it is the greatest power on the earth. Take time to love and be loved as it is a God-given privilege. Take time to be friendly, it is the road to happiness." Lucy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where friends may call beginning Wednesday afternoon after 5 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home and interment will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

A reception will follow in the fellowship area of the First Baptist Church on the corner of Broadway and Montana streets.
