James E. "Jim" Fischer, 86, Garrison, died on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at a Bismarck hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 am at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. A rosary will be said on Sunday beginning at 7:00 pm at the church. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.

James Edmund Fischer was born on June 19, 1927, in Garrison, ND to Edmund and Regina (Burgard) Fischer. He grew up on the family's farm northwest of Garrison and was a 1945 Garrison High School graduate.

Jim married Colleen Posey on June 10, 1950. They had two sons. Colleen passed away on March 1, 1955. Jim married Elaine Geiszler on April 7, 1959. They have five children.

Jim was active in community affairs including, Civil Air Patrol, the Garrison Ambulance Board, Knights of Columbus and the Fort Stevenson Foundation. He was also a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison.

At an early age Jim took flying lessons whenever he could save enough money for them. He purchased his first plane, a Taylorcraft, in 1947, before he even had a car. He then purchased a new Piper PA-11 on February 4, 1947, and flew it home from the factory in Pennsylvania.

Jim farmed with his father and bought the Sidney McElwain farm in 1960. Jim earned his commercial license and began crop spraying with his PA-11 in 1960. Jim also did some winter aerial hunting with the PA-11, with neighbors serving as the gunners. He bought a Pawnee 150 in 1966 and used it in his spraying business until buying a Pawnee 235 in 1991. Jim retired from spraying in 2001 but continued to fly his Mooney Mark 20 that he had purchased in 1967. He retired from farming in 1999.

Jim is survived by his wife Elaine, his children, Craig (Marilyn), Rapid City, SD, Colin (Kathy), Garrison, ND, Kevin (Lisbeth), Paradise, TX, Kileen "Suz" (Tom) Trueblood, Hoyt Lakes, MN, Connie Fischer, Rapid City, SD, Kent (Tricia) Bismarck, ND, and Kelly, Garrison, ND; grandchildren, Jody, Jason, Joshua, Jennifer, Jessica, Lisbeth, Lee, Clay, Melissa, and Dustin; and three great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial of the donor's choice.
