Bert Wayne Helmenstein was born September 28, 1925 at Mandan, North Dakota to Harold and Lydia Helmenstein. He was the first born of 13 children. He went to rural school, graduating from the eighth grade. He farmed until drafted into the Army on December 2, 1950. While in the Army he was sent to Engineering Construction Specialist school in the states and Japan, graduating with honors. He then served the rest of the service time in Korea. He was discharged in October, 1952 is a staff sergeant. He married Lyla Jane Letzring on November 3, 1952.

Lyla Jane (Letzring) Helmenstein was born February 23, 1933 at home north of Judson in Morgan County to Alvin and Louise Letzring, the fourth of seven children. She went to a country school, graduating from the eighth grade. She did household work until her marriage to Bert.

Bert worked for the Patterson Land Company on a ranch north of Sterling, North Dakota for five years, then went into farming for eight years before moving to Center and going into construction work as a carpenter and a heavy equipment operator, working for several different companies. He is presently working for Keith Dahl doing concrete work.

After moving to town, Lyla went back to work cleaning for others. She also planted trees two years with the Soil Conservation Service. She worked at John's U-Save store for 7 1/2 years until it was sold to Jack Potter and renamed Village Market, where she has worked for the past eight and half years. Lyla is presently serving as deacon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, is a member of the church council, chairperson on the Evangelism and Social Concerns Committee, and a member of the choir. Lyla is also a charter member of the Village Gallery Art Association.

They have three children:

Brian Wayne, born December 2, 1953, is married to Teresa Austin and they have one daughter, Melissa.

Brenda Jane, born August 4, 1955, is married to Richard Gorley and they have two children, Jessica and Lora.

Robin Lea, born February 18, 1962, is presently living at home.

Bert and Lyla are members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Center.
