Russel Helmenstein, 70, Bismarck, died Sept. 23, 2003, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Jenks officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Russel was born Oct. 20, 1932, the son of Harold and Lydia (Eckwortzell) Helmenstein in Bluegrass, N.D. He was raised and educated in Otter Creek. He worked in Salt Lake City for 15 years. Russel enjoyed horse breaking.

He is survived by his mother, Lydia, Mandan; six sisters and three brothers-in-law, Lila (Leon) Albert, Washington, Fay Albers, Bismarck, Violet (Bob) Kobs, Salt Lake City, Betty Perkins, Missoula, Mont., Joyce Douglas, Fallon, Nev., and Chyral (Leonard) Schaaf, Baldwin; one brother, Virgil, Minneapolis; one sister-in-law, Lyla Helmenstein, Center; one brother-in-law, John Irvin, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Bert and Gaylord; and three sisters, Phyllis, Geraldine and Mayme
