Funeral service for Evelyn Anderson, 89, of Sidney, is 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor George Karres officiating. Interment will be 2 p.m. in the Medora Cemetery, Medora, N.D., under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Evelyn was born in Shawnee, Wyo., on June 18, 1923, to parents Henry and Elizabeth (Elgin) York. She was the youngest of six children. When she was less than a year old, her family moved back to Oklahoma. They used a covered wagon and horses for transportation. They stayed six years and moved back to Wyoming, this time in a '29 Chevrolet while they shipped their belongings by rail.
Evelyn started school in Glenrock, Wyo., in the fall of 1929. Her Dad and his brother, John, leased a coal mine near Glenrock. In the spring of 1930, her folks moved back to Shawnee, Wyo. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1941. She won a four-year scholarship to the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She did not use it. She didn't want to leave home; she didn't know anyone there and would have needed to work for room and board. She should have gone but never had regrets. She had a job in Douglas, Wyo., in a dentist office for two years. She was going with Verne by then. They were married May 1, 1943, in Douglas.
From the time she was little, she thought she would like to live on a ranch and have a nice house. Verne and she worked for a large ranch north of Douglas, Wyo. They were there five years and left and went to Fred Williams' ranch from there because they had bought a few cows. Fred said they could run 75 cows and have wages. He sold out four months later. He said the ranch was for sale, but he had no takers for a long time. Fred told Verne and Evelyn if they would work for the new owner that winter until they were acquainted with the country that he would help them find a place to lease in the spring and stock the place for them. They would be partners on half of the stock and equipment until they had paid him off. Verne and Evelyn leased a ranch south of Medora, N.D., in 1948. It took them nine years to pay Fred back. In 1957, they bought Fred's half. In 1965, they gave up their lease in Medora and bought a ranch in McKenzie County, 10 miles east of Sidney.
Evelyn liked every place they lived and the folks they worked for, but it was nice to finally have their own place. In 1977, they sold the ranch and moved west of Sidney on the Lambert road. After they got settled in there, Verne was working so Evelyn went to work for the Yellowstone Mercantile to pass time. She was there for nine years. It was working for the men's department and the shoe department. She liked working both departments; she met so many nice people while there. Verne and Evelyn both quit working and enjoyed a little bit of traveling and working around home.
Evelyn and Verne celebrated 60 years of marriage in May of 2003.
