Winney served as a private in Cos. G & C, 78th US Colored Troops Infantry. He was discharged at New Orleans on January 6, 1866.

He then reenlisted as a private in Co. K, 25th U.S. Infantry. he died at Jackson Barracks at New Orleans, Louisiana.

The 25th U.S. Infantry Regiment was known as the Buffalo Soldiers and was in existence from 1866 to 1946.
