He was mustered in as a draftee private in Co. A, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 8, 1864. Captured by the Confederates, he died of pleurisy while a prisoner of war.

His widow, Julia A. Abbott, applied for a pension on 6/19/1866, Application # 128,534.
