He was mustered in as a draftee private in Co. A, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 8, 1864. Captured by the Confederates, he died of pleurisy while a prisoner of war.

His widow, Julia A. Abbott, applied for a pension on 6/19/1866, Application # 128,534.

Pvt. Abbott is listed as buried in Salisbury and is most likely interred within one of the two trenches that was used to bury hundreds of Union prisoners.

Along the outer perimeter of the trench burial area are a series of headstones each inscribed with the simple words "Unknown U.S. Soldier"

The grassy area marks the site of the mass burial trenches where the bodies of Union Soldiers who died in the Confederate Prison in Salisbury are buried. Along the outer perimeter of the area are a series of headstones, two of which can be seen in this photo, each inscribed with the simple words "Unknown U.S. Soldier"

Unknown Soldiers Monument

Inscription:

Front (side facing the trenches): "In 18 trenches just south of this spot, rest the bodies of 11, 700 soldiers of the United States Army, who perished during the years 1864-1865 while held by the Confederate military authorities as prisoners of war in a stockage near this place."

Rear (side facing the cemetery entrance): "This monument was erected by act of Congress approved March 3, 1873 to the memory of the unknown Union soldiers who died in the Confederate Prison at Salisbury, N.C."

Left Side: "For our country 'tis a bliss to die"

Right Side: "They died that their country might live."
