JACKSONVILLE - Charles Wilbur Abbott Sr. Ret. Lt. Col., USMC, 84, passed away Saturday May 11, 2013, at Onslow Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
Charles W. Abbott was born July 16, 1928, in Clarksdale, Miss., to the late Lyman Clark Abbott and Ada May Sparks Abbott.
Charles W. Abbott served in the USMC from Dec. 1945, until his retirement in June of 1976. He attended boot camp at Parris Island where he graduated private, USMC. His first assignment was to Camp Lejeune, then on to Marine Barracks Newport, R.I., followed by Fort Riley, Kan., and then back to Camp Lejeune, where after making sergeant, he met and married his wife, Lucille. Next stop was OCS in Quantico, Va., and a commission to second lieutenant, and subsequent rise to lieutenant colonel over the following years.
During that time he, his wife, and their eventual family of three children, lived in various locations around the country, including San Diego, Calif., Garden City, N.Y., Quantico, Va., Alexandria, Va., and finally back to Camp Lejeune, where he retired. Also during that period, he completed tours in Korea, 1953, Vietnam, 1964 and 1970, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, 1969.
Following retirement he and his wife lived in Jacksonville, where in recent years he enjoyed being involved in the affairs of the Heritage Square Home Owners Association and serving as its President at one point. He was a well-known fixture of the community riding around on his bicycle, making sure everything was "squared away." Throughout his life, and particularly after retirement, he also enjoyed spending time on the water in his boat, fishing, shrimping, and clamming and to the dismay of his wife, flounder gigging at night sometimes by himself. We will miss him dearly.

Abbott is survived by his wife, Mary Lucille Abbott; son, Charles W Abbott Jr., of Gardnerville, Nev.; daughter, Mary Susan Cruddas of Jacksonville; son-in-law, Clark Rechtin, of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren, David Mathew Larsen of New Orleans, La., Jessica Brooke Cruddas of Jacksonville, Charles W. Abbott III of Riverside, Calif., Nathan Clark Rechtin of Louisville, Ky., and Mary Lelia Rechtin of Louisville, Ky.; and one great-grandchild, Julian Antonio Simmonds of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Lee Rechtin of Louisville, Ky.; and his five brothers and four sisters.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15 at Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Lerow officiating, burial to follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society . The family will be receiving guests at the Abbott residence, 2118 Colony Plaza, immediately following the services on Wednesday.
