M. Pat McGough, 82, Moscow

Mildred Patricia (Pat) McGough died at Aspen Park Nursing Center, Moscow, on 22 July 2012, after complications from Alzheimer's. Born 26 February 1930, to Reuben and Margaret Swalley of Yoder Wyoming, Pat lived most of her life in Moscow.

Following WWII, she met and married Dwight Abbott, beginning a family that gave her four children, many grand and great grandchildren. From the earliest days of marriage she became a long term resident of Moscow and Viola.

During her years in the Palouse, she worked at a variety of jobs that included cashier at Modern Way grocery, assisting at her father-in-law's motel, and while living on the family homestead for a few years in the late 1950s, she and the kids picked berries and raised rabbits that were sold to local groceries to supplement the family income. Following the family return to the city, she took a job at the University of Idaho, Food Services. There, she began as salad chef and was promoted to more responsible positions, finally becoming second in charge of dietary services. She earned retirement and the traditional mantel clock for her long and dedicated service. In the following years she fondly recalled student antics and her workmates.

In the early years, leisure activities included family camping and fishing trips along the creeks of the Palouse, digging for garnets in the many out of the way streambeds, and huckleberry picking excursions in the mountains of north Idaho. Sitting around the evening camp fire enjoying family and stories of the "old days" was always a special time.

Later in life, she and husband Norm McGough bought a small house in Elk River, becoming weekend residents many months of the year. In addition to enjoying family gatherings, four-wheeling, fishing on the lake, and other outdoor activities, she became an avid yard sale enthusiast. She and husband Norm (doing route planning and the driving) would be seen all over Moscow and the surrounds searching for bargains. A bottle, cup, or dish of dark blue glass was always a treasured find. Her home always included a dog, cat, or both, frequently donated by one of her children. The latest, a Jack Russell rescued from the city kennel, ensured she got plenty of exercise tending to Jackie's demands. She also followed the Seattle Mariners, rarely missing a game, and frequently attended weekly Bingo at the Moose with daughter, Mary Jo.

Raised during the lean years following the Great Depression, she had great empathy for those struggling to make a life for themselves. She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally, without complaint, and welcomed all into her home. Some came for a few days, while others stayed a bit longer. Each has favorite stories and fond memories of their time with Pat.

The Memorial Service will be held Friday, 27 July at 10:30 am, at Shorts Funeral Chapel, Moscow. A reception will be held at the Moose Lodge, Moscow, immediately following the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Palouse, Gritman Medical Center, 700 South Main Street, Moscow, Idaho 83843, in lieu of flowers.
