John Roland Richards, 80, our loving husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away peacefully May 10th at home surrounded by his family.

Born April 15, 1924 in Sandy, UT to Duane and Laura Bringhurst Richards. He graduated from South High in 1942 and attended the U of U and City College of NY. Jack served his country in World War II. He married his sweetheart and eternal companion Gloria Mae Carlisle Richards, May 7, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Jack worked for years at Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance as a Sales Manager. He managed Hygeia Ice Rink and Pool, and in his later years he worked for the LDS church. Jack served in many LDS church callings including bishop and was the Region 10 athletic director where he helped run the All Church Tournaments.

He loved sports and spent years coaching and playing golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, and football with his family. Dad could always be found cheering us on at all our games or at dance recitals supporting his only daughter. Dad loved to go hunting and fishing with the family, and some of the most memorable times were spent in Antimony on the deer hunt with his boys. He loved spending time with Mom and they were rarely apart. Dad taught all of us how to work hard, play hard, gave us clever insight, always had a kind word, and that family is the most important part of our lives.

Survived by his wife, Gloria; sons, Randy (Rosalie), Golden, Doug (Kerry) Sterling (Cidney), Royal (Elissa), Russell (Kim); daughter, Dollie (Masa) Sugiura; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald.

The family expresses their gratitude to the staff at Vista Care Hospice.

Friends may call Thursday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. 12:00 noon at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 So.
