Marjorie June Abel
June 29, 1924 - August 28, 2009

Marjorie June Abel, the daughter of Harry and Emma Christensen Shook, was born June 29, 1924, in Gruver, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in rural Gruver and Spencer Iowa, where she received her education in country schools and later graduated from Spencer High School. After high school, she performed office work for several different places and lived on her parent's farm until 1940, when she then moved in to Spencer.

Marjorie married Carl Abel on January 13, 1946, in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Greenville for over 40 years, before moving to Spencer in 1990.

Marjorie was very active in the First English Lutheran Church. She was on the care committee in which she visited people at the nursing homes. She was also a volunteer at the hospital and helped deliver meals on wheels. During the early 1980's, Marjorie was involved in helping the Vietnamese Refugees that relocated to northwest Iowa area. They were very important to her, and they are still considered family today.

She enjoyed doing latch-hook, collecting information from newspapers and sent news stories to people. She kept a daily journal of what she did. She also liked to collect items with butterflies on them. Marjorie was a detail oriented person who liked to make sure the job was done right. Marjorie was a very caring person who loved her family very much. She always sent cards and presents to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made it a point every night to keep them all in her prayers.

Marjorie passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, August 28, 2009, at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Earnest and her sister, Gladys.
