James L. "Bunk" Brashears, 87, of Amarillo died Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in at South Georgia Baptist Church with Chaplain John Esler officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Bunk was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Davis, Okla., to Douglas and Ollie Brashears, but was raised in Shamrock. He served during World War II with the Army First Cavalry division, being stationed in the Philippines and Japan. After the end of the war, he re-enlisted for another year and a half. One of his favorite stories was, at the end of the war, the ship he was aboard paralleled the one where the Japanese were signing the peace treaty and he got to watch through his binoculars.

James married Charline Clement on May 31, 1947, in Shamrock. He was a carpenter for more than 40 years and after retirement, he worked on the by-pass around Canyon as an overpass superintendent. He also spent time doing seasonal wheat harvesting in Happy. Bunk enjoyed gardening, growing alfalfa, and had a large fruit orchard. He was known for the love of his family and seldom missed family reunions. The love of his life in his later years were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James also was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his only son, James Brashears Jr., in 1974; three brothers; four sisters; four stepbrothers; and three stepsisters.

Survivors include his wife, Charline Brashears; three daughters, Cindy Henson of Amarillo, Lisa Wilhelm and husband Roger of Wellington and Carla Brashears of Amarillo; a brother, Bill Brashears of Lawton, Okla.; a sister, Jewel Aaron of Davis, Okla.; a stepsister, June Ogle of Richardson; five grandchildren, Ashley Peters and husband Dennis, Lindsey Wilhelm and Matt Wilhelm, all of Wellington, and Brittney Collins and Wimberly Collins-Heras, both of Amarillo; and five great-grandchildren, Chloe Peters, Rileigh Wilhelm, Breytton Wright, Blayke Wright, and Aariyah Marie Heras.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
