A 1975 graduate of Clarke County High School, she was employed with Pic-N-Sav Deli of Jackson until her health failed.
Confessing Christ at an early age, she joined Indian Ridge Baptist Church of Whatley, later moving her membership to Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church in Suggsville, where she served as choir director and president of the choir. She enjoyed singing for the Lord.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lee Etta Portis Foster.
Left to cherish her memories are her devoted husband, Willie J. Abston of Suggsville; two sons, Ansel Darnell (Angel) Portis of Toddtown and Aron Terall Portis of Suggsville; one stepson and stepdaughter, Timothy (Erica) Abston of Jackson and Malinda Abston of Toddtown; seven sisters, Shellie (Charlie) Pugh of Toddtown, Annie Mary Phillips of Camden, Carrie Taylor of Jackson, Lee Fields of Boston, Mass., Annie P. Phillips of Mobile, Faye (Terry) Hunt of Alma and Ethel (Willie) Jackson of Gainestown; four brothers, L.C. Portis, Fred Earl (Mary) Portis, Minister Fredrick Portis, all of Suggsville, and Frank (Rutha) Phillips Jr. of Camden; brother-in-law, Willie Jones Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; six grandchildren; four adopted children, Fredrick, Jamie, Stevens and Joseph; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Viewing is today, Thursday, from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11, at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Willie Mae Rice, pastor, and the Rev. Prospere Sainvilus as eulogist. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
