Sites had enlisted in the Union Army sometime between 1861 when the civil war began and 1865, the year he died, not from battle but from disease. His rank was as a private, Company C in the 15th Regiment Michigan infantry. George was buried in the old cemetery at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. Jane was provided for in his pension from the United States government for her fathers' service in the civil war. Since she was so young, born 19 days after his death, the pension recipient was her grandfather, Hans J. Helland. She lived with him and her mother. Her mother married Peter Hanson and after she obtained a divorce, she married Erick Lind. Jane was 14 years of age when she married her first husband, Edward John Abrahamson a native, of Sweden.
