"In Jun 1851 he appears in the Minutes of Jerusalum Baptist Church as moderator in the case of W.B. Wall in Amite county, Mississippi. In 1851 he appears in the Minutes of the Mississippi River Baptist Association as a Minister of the association in Amite county, Mississippi. In 1852 he appears in the Minutes of the Mississippi River Baptist Association as Rev. J. D. Abney, moderator in Amite county, Mississippi. In 1853 he moved from St. Helena Parish, Louisiana after Sarah's death to Angelina county, Texas", from Lisa Franklin.

Sarah died in St. Helena while J.D. served as minster.

J.D. & Sarah had 7 children: 1) Dorothy, 2)Susan, 3) Paul, 4)Elizabeth, 5) John Armie, 6)J.D., Jr.,7)Nathaniel.
