Nancy Barrow Abbitt, 84, passed away at her home in Oak Ridge on Friday morning, November 11, 2016.
Mrs. Abbitt’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 14, at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Craig Kocher and Rev. Abbey Kocher officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A Guilford County native, Nancy was born on February 7, 1932, the daughter of the late Martin Luther Barrow and Alice Case Barrow. She grew up on the family farm and went on to receive a teaching degree from Woman’s College of The University of North Carolina. Nancy taught science in Forsyth County public school system for more than 30 years, and prior to that she taught Home Economics at The School for the Blind in Raleigh, NC. After retiring she co-owned and operated Mac-Nan Greenhouse. She was a member of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church where she was active in the Women’s Circle. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, traveling, and time spent with family on the family farm. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Martin Lewis Abbitt.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Collin McKinnon ‘Mac’ Abbitt of the home; 3 children Collin McKinnon Abbitt, III (Margie) of Tennessee, Ann Abbitt Bird (Mitch) of Suffolk, Va., and Alice Abbitt of Anthem, Az.; sisters Betty Blaylock of Greensboro and Mary Lou Hawes (Boyd) of Oak Ridge; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 5 until 7 p.m. at Forbis & Dick – Stokesdale.
