Opal Anderson, 79, of Murdo died Monday, March 19, 1990 in St. Mary's hospital in Pierre. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 24 at the United Methodist Church in Murdo with the Rev. Jack Erickson officiating.
Opal was born March 17, 1911 in Interior, SD to Frank and Effie (Cressy) Newsam. She grew up in rural Murdo attending Kolls Country school and graduating from Murdo High School. She received her BS Degree in Education from the Black Hills State Teachers College. Opal was an elementary teacher and taught school in rural Jones County, Okaton and Murdo Public Schools. On June 2, 1934 Opal married Helge Anderson at Pierre, SD. They made their home on a farm north of Murdo for several years before moving to Murdo.
Opal was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed being around people, especially children. In her leisure time she enjoyed arts and crafts and spending time with her flowers and plants.
Her sisters and friends cherish the gifts Opal made for them. She always remembered birthdays and anniversaries.
Opal is survived by two sons, Clifford, Murdo, and Douglas, Sturgis; two brothers, Charles Newsam, Murdo and Fred Newsam, Racine, Wis, and four sisters; Vera (Mrs. Henry) Anderson of Spearfish, Verna (Mrs. Alvah "Babe") Reynolds, Beryl (Mrs. John) Nolder and Edyth (Mrs. Stewart) Nolder, all of Murdo; six grandchildren, one step grandson, and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Helge in 1985, her parents and an infant daughter.
At the memorial service, the Methodist Ladies Choral Group sang, "Life;s Railway to Heaven" and "One day at a time". Marilyn Seymour played the organ.
Casket bearers were Robert and Ron Kinsley, Melvin "Butch" Feddersen, Chuck Strait, Dennis Hurst, and John Brunskill. Ushers were William Chambliss and Bernard Strait. Evelyn Kuhrt and Martha Kinsley tended the register and memorials. Internment was at the Murdo Cemetery with Hofmeister's in charge of arrangements.
