CHARLES FRED TOMLIN
News has been received of the death of Charles Fred Tomlin, former Selma resident, who died following a heart attack in Charlotte, N.C., on May 18. He was 54 years old. Mr. Tomlin grew up in Selma where he attended Dallas Academy and Byrd School. As a youth, he joined the U.S. Navy and was signalman on his ship during World War II. He was injured in a battle off the African Coast and remained partially disabled for the rest of his life. For the past few years, he had made his home in Florence, S.C., where he was vice-president of his company and a traveling auditor. Funeral services were held in Florence May 19, and burial was in LaFayette, Ala., on May 20. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mary Helen Laverette Tomlin; one son, Jimmy Tomlin; his mother, Mrs. Charlie Tomlin, of Huntsville; his brother, Algie Tomlin, of LaGrange, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. H. L. Cooper, of Trussville, and Mrs. J. E. Aaron, of Huntsville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Bill Daniels, of Selma, is a great-nephew.
