Carmen C. Achaval, 93, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Front Royal conducted by Rev. Kevin Beres. Burial will follow in Rockland Cemetery.

Carmen was born May 23, 1921 in Ispaster, Spain, daughter of the late Ingacio Cortabitarte and Cecilia Achaval Cortabitarte.

Carmen came to the United States in 1946 with her husband Faustino to flee political changes in Spain after the Spanish Civil War. She always maintained her love for Spain and the United States, and at 80 years old she became an American citizen.

During her lifetime Carmen became a very accomplished seamstress making beautiful curtains for homes in the surrounding counties and Georgetown area. Two of her favorite projects were work done for Elizabeth Taylor and Project Hope. Carmen was an extraordinary lady. Family and friends will miss her fierce independence, Basque spirit, eye for beauty, creativity and special love for her grandchildren.

Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Achaval and her husband Frederick Cunningham of Mechanicsville, VA; two sisters, Baldomar and Gloria both of Ispaster, Spain; and five grandchildren, Nathan Cunningham, Daniel Cunningham, Lauren Cunningham; Michael Cunningham, and Emma-Elise Cunningham.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:00 at Maddox Funeral Home.
