Oliver Dean Abbott, 70, of Effingham, died at 8:50 a.m. Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Jonathan Creek Cemetery rural Sullivan. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. The Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born June 28, 1932, a son of Red and Ester Clayton Abbott. He married Alice Lee Tindell Holmes in 1975; she died in 1999. Survivors include sons, Jeffery Dale Abbott of Springfield and Allan Chone of Effingham; daughters, Annette Evans of Godley and Mary Miller of Effingham; brothers, Cecil Abbott of Mattoon and John Abbott of Salt Lake City, Utah; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Abbott retired as a trackman from Illinois Gulf Central Railroad in 1996. He and his wife were foster parents to 39 children. He was a member and board member of the Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church, Effingham.
