MARTINSVILLE, VA - Phyllis C. Abbott passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. The family has entrusted arrangements to Cremation Society of Charlotte, Inc.

ABBOTT, Phyllis Carwile
Phyllis Carwile Abbott, 75, of Martinsville, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville, N.C. She was born in Farmville, Va. on December 29, 1940, to the late Albert Hearn Carwile and Nina Williams Carwile.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 54 years, John R. Abbott; and her daughters, Anita A. Philpott (David), of Greensboro, N.C., G. Whitney Seate (Rob), of Charlotte, N.C.; and son, John R. Abbott Jr. (Jennifer) of Saraland, Ala.; grandsons, Stuart and Trent Philpott, Beau and Carter Seate; and grand-daughter, Kaitlyn Abbott. She also leaves behind her sister, Maxine Perkins (Robert) of Yuma, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
Phyllis grew up in Rustburg, Va., attended Longwood College and was a graduate of Averett College. She worked as a substitute teacher as she raised her young family, and later worked at Martinsville High School in the Guidance Department and at the Social Security Administration from which she retired. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Martinsville where she served in multiple capacities including Deacon, Sanctuary Choir, Prison Ministry, Flower Committee, WMU, GA leader and Sunday School. She was on the board of the American Red Cross and over the years belonged to several book and bridge clubs, Piedmont Arts, and Longwood Alumni Association. She loved ballroom dancing, art and most of all spending time with her family and friends. She was a friend to many and beloved by all.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Martinsville with the Rev. John T. Fulcher, Jr. and the Rev. Matthew Dodrill officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and other times at the home. Interment will be at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery, Gladys, Va. on Saturday, March 26, 2016.
