NOTE: James had two obituaries -- SALEM DEMOCRAT, 10/13/1915 and PAOLI REPUBLICAN, 10/27/1915. This is a compilation of both.

James B. Abel went home to his God on Friday morning, October 8, 1915, after an illness of eleven weeks of typhoid fever. He died at his home in Paoli, Indiana.

He was born in Orange county, Indiana on September 10, 1857. He married Sarah E. Myers (Lizzie) on October 5, 1882 at Spring Mill, Indiana. He was born again and united with Paoli Baptist Church on April 23, 1892.

Together, he and his wife had four children. Three of his children preceded him in death. They are Clinton, an infant, and Clarence. His infant son lived but a short time. His other two sons passed away when they were quite small.

Survivors include his wife; his daughter, Blanche and her companion; his four brothers, John, George, Taylor, and Frank; and his three sisters, Mrs. Mahala Mahan, Mrs. Julian McCracken, and Mrs. Cynthia Ferrel; an entire church, and a host of friends mourn the loss of this godly man.

He was very patient through his illness, and all that loving hearts and willing hands could do was done for him. He was a member of the Paoli Baptist Church and Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was not a perfect man, but what he believed, he lived. His home was his sanctum, his family his joy, his Sunday school and his church his delight, to loaf was a disgrace, to tattle was beneath the gentleman, to slight his work was dishonoring to character. His employers held him in highest esteem and loved him. Those who knew him honored him and with the sacred writer, "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches." His treasures are laid up "where neither moth nor rust corrupt, nor thieves break through and steal."

The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church in Paoli, the pastor Rev. Chas. A. Sigmon conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Gaines, of West Baden. The large attendance and the many beautiful floral offerings bore testimony of the high esteem in which he was held. Mr. Abel was formerly a resident of Salem, living here more than a year, being employed by the Stout Furniture Co. The family has many friends and relatives here who extended sympathy. He was buried in Paoli Cemetery.
