On August 16, 1862, he was a Civil War Union soldier who was private in Company F, 81st Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers. He was mustered out 13 June 1865. He was on the list of pensioners in 1883.

He married Sarah Matilda Cornwell, Sept. 8, 1864 in Orange Co, IN. He married Luoinda McCracken on 21 July 1869 in Orange Co, IN.

After the death of his wife, he lived with his eldest daughter in Danville, KY.
