SHELDON, Iowa - Elsie Zuiderweg, 96, of Sheldon died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Oak Park Care Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon with the Rev David Loveall officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Mrs. Zuiderweg was born July 13, 1901, in Hospers, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Josiena (Drost) De Vries. She attended rural school, Archer High School and Sheldon High School.

In 1921 she graduated with a normal training certificate enabling her to teach in rural schools. She taught in Sioux and O'Brien counties.

She married Garmt Zuiderweg. The couple moved to Paullina in 1960 where she was employed at Brink Hardware and Furniture for 10 years. He died in 1962.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday School, was active in Presbytertan Women and in Book Club and Expression Group of Paullina Women's Club. In Sheldon she was a member of Bethel Reformed Church and Martha Circle.

She enjoyed writing poems, making cornhusk dolls, crocheting, knitting and reading.
Survivors include a brother, Joe De Vries, and a sister, Minnie Brink both of Sheldon; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dick, Gerrit and Jay; two sisters, Lucy De Vries and Jennie Aalders; a brother-in-law; a sister-in-law- and two stepdaughters, Lois Leaming and Ann Smithers.
