Two fires were particularly deadly in the history of the region. They are as follows. A load of hay burst into flames at the mouth of the Bullion adit and set fire to the adjoining buildings on Nov 20, 1901. Drafts sucked smoke into the tunnels, endangering the new shift of miners inside. The tunnel was ordered dynamited too late, and many mean died while trying to rescue their companions. Twenty-Eight Men. The ensuing mass funeral on Nov 23, 1901, was the largest event ever held at the Lone Tree Cemetery.
